Cablevision is one of the nation's leading telecommunications and entertainment companies in serving the New York Metropolitan area. Their past practice had been to discard all returned wires and remote controls that were returned by consumers. As the company expanded, they realized that this practice was not only costly to consumers but also environmentally improper.
Early in 2004, a Cablevision employee, who had previously worked at an organization which outsourced assembly jobs to Employment Horizons, contacted our Customer Services Manager to discuss this situation. In turn, she was quick to point out ways that our agency could help them resolve their problems.
By agreeing to subcontract with Employment Horizons, Cablevision created a win-win situation for all involved and has created work opportunities for approximately all 125 workers in the agency's Packaging & Assembly unit. For more than five years, Employment Horizons has accepted all of Cablevision's returned materials.
Our workers follow standards that Cablevision has established, inspect all the wires to make sure that they are free of cuts and foreign substances and clean those that are "accepted". Similarly, the remote controls are inspected, old batteries are taken out and new ones are installed to make sure that the units work, and working remotes are then packaged in bags and heat sealed. This arrangement benefits Cablevision in that the cleaning and salvaging process is environmentally friendly and saves consumers fees.
From Employment Horizons' viewpoint, this project has created enormous work opportunities for our program participants and enabled them to train and learn work skills that they might not otherwise have developed. By partnering with Employment Horizons, Cablevision has enabled these individuals to become more productive and self sufficient members of the community and assisted our agency in meeting its mission.
